The Proto-Masoretic Text

Emmanuel Tov has a ten-part series on the Proto-Masoretic here. Textual criticism can get a bit technical but these articles seem to have been written with a non-technical audience in mind.

Paul's Beheading

Today is one of the proposed dates for Paul's beheading. Although the apostle's death is not recorded in the Bible, it is so well-attested in church tradition that few doubt its veracity. Dating is another matter although there seems to be broad agreement in placing it in the AD 60s. In any case, you can read this article on the matter.

Hebrew Texts, Lexicons, and Grammars

Marc Brettler has a good discussion here on using Hebrew texts, lexicon, and grammar and illustrates each point. Brettler also highlights a website he has created on Tools for Studying the Hebrew Bible. A cursory scan suggests that this will be one to bookmark.

A Typology of Red-Purple?

Elliott Stevens has an interest post here on the possible typology of red-purple in the Bible. I am not entirely convinced of the entire argument including whether this really qualifies as typology. But I do think that some of the connections are worth considering.

Unanswered Prayer

Justin Dillehay provides four possible reasons here. Another reason could be sin. A number of passages might support this (e.g., Ps 66:18; Prov 28:9; Isa 59:2; 1 Pet 3:7). Whether texts like these refer to a deficiency in praying or God's unwillingness to answer but in either case the net result is the same.
