Paul’s Use of the Old Testament in 1 Corinthians 5

Jeremy Kimble's article here on Paul’s use of the Old Testament ("purge the evil person from among you") in 1 Corinthians 5 from the latest issue of Themelios is worth reading. It is  another example of a New Testament author using an Old Testament text with contextual sensitivity.

True and False Prophets: Jeremiah Versus Hananiah

James Diamond has an interesting discussion of how Jewish tradition has understood true versus false prophets in light of Jeremiah 27–28. Some explanations are more convincing than others and Maimonides approach seems outright strange. In any case, you can check it out here.

Proverbs as Promises

Jim Davis has an interesting take on viewing Proverbs as promises here. He suggests that proverbs, "set the bare minimum for what the Christian can expect." But I am not sure the dichotomy that Davis sets between "probabilities" and "promises" are the only options. I would prefer the idea of principles rather than promises. That is, if one follows a line of true wisdom, then the aspect of life covered by that wisdom is more skillfully navigated. Wisdom as a genre does not typically operate with mathematical precision.

Bereans and the Bible

Griffin Gulledge provides some helpful insight here to what the Bereans might have actually practiced in Acts 17:11. His point on the Old Testament is perhaps the most important one given the attitude of many Christians to this part of Scripture.
