1 Corinthians 14:34-35 Again

I recently posted about the recently renewed interest in the text-critical issue involving 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 (see here). Richard Fellows has now posted on the issue and questions Payne's measurements of the bars in Vaticanus. I wont take the time to explain it further, but this is wonderful Bible nerd stuff and encourage you to check it out here.

The Photo Companion to the Bible

I have long touted the resources produced by Todd Bolen and BiblePlaces. This post shows one reason why the Photo Companion to the Bible is such a valuable resource to the teacher, preacher, or student. The labeling in this resource is a frustration-reducing time-saver. Even seasoned Bible students have a hard time identifying places and features of biblically related sites. You can do your own time-consuming research by examining numerous other resources but with the Photo Companion it is already done for you by someone who is well-versed in biblical geography.

Those involved in the academic world are usually familiar with the phenomenon of student entitlement. This post by Maryellen Weimar provides a brief but helpful discussion on the topic. I particularly appreciate Weimar's comment that, "telling them that’s wrong isn’t likely to change the attitude. It helps if teachers clarify their expectations with constructive positive language and even more importantly with discussions of the rationales on which those expectations rest."

Bob Wilkin has some helpful thoughts here concerning choosing a seminary. I think Bob's reminder that there can be a disconnect between an institutions doctrinal statement and what is actually held and taught is important. His reminder concerning prayer and spiritual formation is also worth considering.

Mark 1:13 and the Old Testament

John Meade notes here some possible allusions in Mark 1:13 to the LXX of Leviticus 26:6 and Psalm 90:11-13. The possible connections are interesting and perhaps correct but I think he overstates the conclusion.

"The allusions to the Old Testament are actually the key to understanding the brief pericope itself. The allusions indicate that Jesus as Son obeyed under temptation and trial, was consequently blessed, and dealt a decisive blow to Satan in the wilderness."

I doubt whether understanding these allusions are the "key." One could probably understand that, "Jesus as Son obeyed under temptation and trial, was consequently blessed, and dealt a decisive blow to Satan in the wilderness" without picking up on the allusions. One could also question whether Mark's primarily Gentile audience have picked up on these subtle allusions.
