The Population of the Roman Empire in the First Century

Although, this is not strictly a biblical issue, the size of the population of the Roman Empire does provide some background for understanding the New Testament. A recent study based on coin counts posted at Yahoo.com concludes that "the entire population of the Roman Empire - and not just its male population - was somewhere around 4 million to 5 million people by the end of the first century B.C.
